Camping Options Around Glamis

-
Gordon's Well: This popular camping area is located near the entrance to Glamis and offers convenient access to the dunes. It features a large open area for camping and is known for its vibrant community atmosphere. You’ll find plenty of space for large groups, making it a great spot to meet fellow off-roaders.
-
Buttercup Valley: Situated just a few miles from the dunes, Buttercup Valley offers easy access and stunning views. This area is perfect for families and groups, providing a spacious environment for camping. You can enjoy the serene desert landscape while still being close to the action.
-
Glamis Flats: Located close to the main entrance of the dunes, Glamis Flats is an established campground with amenities such as restrooms and trash disposal. It's a great option for those who prefer a more organized camping experience while still having easy access to the dunes.
-
Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area: This area encompasses several camping spots, including popular sites like the Coyote Wash, Gecko, and Sand Hill. These locations provide quick access to the dunes and offer a mix of open and sheltered camping spots.
Preparing Your UTV for Glamis Dunes
Before hitting the dunes, it's crucial to ensure your UTV is ready for the sandy terrain. Here are some essential preparations:
-
Tires: Choose the right tires for sand riding. Sand-specific tires with a wide footprint will help prevent your UTV from sinking into the sand and provide better traction. Consider airing down your tires to improve grip and ride comfort.
-
Maintenance Check: Conduct a thorough pre-ride inspection of your UTV. Check the brakes, lights, oil levels, and air filters. Make sure everything is in good working condition.
-
Fuel: Fill up your gas tank before heading to Glamis. While there are fuel stations nearby, it’s always wise to arrive with a full tank, as you’ll want to spend as much time riding as possible.
-
Bring Recovery Gear: Prepare for the possibility of getting stuck in the sand. Bring a shovel, recovery straps, and a tire pump, as these items can be invaluable in helping you get back on track if needed.
- Dune Pass & OHV Sticker (Non-California Residents only): Dune passes and for riders coming out of state, OHV tags are a requirement to enjoy in the dunes. Caught without either, and you could face a hefty fine. We sell both weekly and seasonal dune passes as well as the OHV stickers at One Offroad (online sales not allowed). If you're already headed out to the dunes, don't worry because the BLM ranger station at Gecko and the Glamis Beach Store have them available for purchase.
Packing Essentials for Your Trip
Proper packing will ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Here’s a checklist of essential items to bring:
- Safety Gear: Always wear a helmet, goggles, gloves, and a riding suit. Protective gear is crucial for your safety while navigating the dunes.
- Water and Snacks: Stay hydrated, especially in the desert heat. Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up throughout the day.
- Camping Supplies: If you plan to camp, pack your tent, sleeping bag, and cooking equipment. Don't forget to bring firewood or charcoal for cooking and s'mores!
- Navigation Tools: While Glamis is expansive, it’s easy to get disoriented. Bring a GPS device, a map of the area, or download offline maps on your phone.
Riding Tips for Glamis Dunes
Riding at Glamis Dunes can be an exhilarating experience, but it’s essential to stay safe and respectful of the environment. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Know Your Limits: If you're a beginner, start with smaller dunes and gradually work your way up. Don’t push yourself too hard; safety should always be your priority.
- Watch for Other Riders: Glamis can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Be aware of your surroundings and communicate with fellow riders to avoid collisions.
Exploring Beyond the Dunes
While Glamis is all about the dunes, don’t miss out on some other activities in the area:
- Sunset Views: Take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking desert sunsets. The vibrant colors of the sky against the sandy backdrop are a sight you won’t want to miss.
- Night Riding: If you're up for it, consider night riding. The dunes look entirely different under the stars, and riding in the cooler evening temperatures can be refreshing.
Final Thoughts
Your first trip to Glamis Dunes promises to be an adventure filled with excitement, breathtaking views, and unforgettable memories. By preparing your UTV, packing the right essentials, and following safety guidelines, you’ll be set for an incredible experience in the heart of California's desert.
